The Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation celebrated Jane Eilertson as the longest-tenured teacher in the Sioux Falls School District. This fall, Eilertson began her 43rd year in education, a remarkable milestone that reflects decades of dedication, passion, and impact on young learners.
Eilertson currently teaches kindergarten at Garfield Elementary, where she has spent the majority of her career—41 years, to be exact. She began her journey in the district as a resource teacher at Hawthorne Elementary, spending two years there before joining Garfield. For 16 years, she taught first grade before transitioning to kindergarten, where she continues to make a lasting impression on students and families alike.
Reflecting on her career, Eilertson noted the many changes she has witnessed in education over the years, especially the evolution of classroom technology and a noticeable decline in what she lovingly calls “lap time”—the simple, powerful act of adults reading with children.
Last week, Eilertson received a surprise recognition during a staff meeting at Garfield. She was also honored the previous year during a back-to-school breakfast sponsored by the Education Foundation (https://www.argusleader.com/story/news/education/2024/08/21/garfield-teacher-jane-eilertson-honored-by-sioux-falls-public-schools-education-foundation/74871252007/) In 2023, the Foundation similarly recognized Sue Bills of Whittier Middle School for her 44 years in the classroom. Bills retired in May 2024 (https://www.keloland.com/news/local-news/education-foundation-honors-longtime-teacher/).
“Talent and recognition is one of our focus areas,” said Allison Struck, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation. “It is rare for anyone to spend four decades in one career, and when that happens, like with Sue Bills and Jane Eilertson, you want to honor their investment in students.”
Outside the classroom, Eilertson and her husband live on a farm. In her early teaching years, she would occasionally bring in piglets, creating unforgettable, joy-filled memories for her young students.
Eilertson’s career is a testament to the power of consistency, compassion, and a deep commitment to education. Her legacy continues to shape generations of learners in Sioux Falls (she has taught grandchildren of some of her first students), and the Education Foundation is honored to celebrate her.
